Can Robot Mowers Get Wet? Water Ratings Explained

Can robot mowers get wet? Learn what IPX5, IPX6 and IP66 mean, then see the stated robot mower rain and water rating for each published model, with prices.

What an IP code means

IP stands for ingress protection. The code comes from the IEC 60529 standard, which Wikipedia summarizes in its article on the IP code. It has two digits. The first rates protection against solid objects such as dust. The second rates protection against water. When a maker does not test one of them, the digit is replaced by an X, so "IPX6" means water-tested to level 6 with no stated dust rating.

The water digits you will see on mowers, per the same article:

A higher digit does not mean a better mower, only a tougher test. The 5 and 6 tests use jets, not submersion. Neither IPX5 nor IPX6 is an immersion rating, so a mower is not rated to sit in standing water. The IP66 rating on Navimow models adds a dust-tight first digit (6) to the same water level as IPX6.

What the ratings are for

A jet rating is a lab test of water hitting the case from any direction. We do not have data on each maker's test conditions or care rules, so read the manual before you hose a mower down.

Our data does not include rain-sensor or weather-delay features for these models, so this guide does not claim any. Check the maker's spec page if that matters to you.

No water rating stated in our data

The Sunseeker X5 and the three Worx Landroid Vision Cloud models (WR310.1, WR320.1 and WR340) have no water rating in our data. That does not mean they lack one. Check the maker's spec sheet before you buy.

How to buy with water in mind

Start by checking that the model you want has a rating at all. Among the models with a stated rating, the practical gap is small, so use other specs to choose. If your yard is wet and sloped, an all-wheel-drive mower such as the Dreame A3 AWD 1000 at $1,399.99 or the Segway Navimow i206 AWD at $899 is worth a look, since both carry a stated water rating and list AWD. Slope ratings for them are 80% and 45%.

Keep the charging dock in mind as well. Our data covers the mower's rating, not the dock's, so read the maker's manual for where the dock should sit and how it should be sheltered.

Reading the pattern

Nearly every model here sits at IPX6 or IP66, so water rating rarely separates one mower from another. The one lower rating is the Worx WR220 at IPX5, a step down in jet strength. If you care about long-term wear, look at the warranty instead; see robot mower warranties compared.

Water rating also says nothing about how a mower copes with wet grass. Slope and drive type matter more there, and our slope guide covers them.

Our top picks

The best-scoring model in each list. Scores compare models within one list, so 100 means best there on every point, not perfect.

Scores reward a low price, a big lawn size, steep slope ratings and long warranties, all as the makers state them. They don't measure how well a mower maps, avoids obstacles or handles your lawn, so use them to shortlist, then read the model pages.
